Scientology: the Bait-and-Switch Cult

The Ralph Dorian Saga

In 1998, a series of posts appeared on newsgroup <alt.religion.scientology> explaining many things about Scientology. The first two articles were posted by Bob Minton under his own name, but later he revealed that they were authored by others.

The first is entitled “Scientology and Evil”, and is a sort of preface to the second, longer article.

The second, two-part article, is entitled “Scientology versus Democracy”. The first part is an introduction to the topic, and The second part relates how the cult magages to gather so many victims. No matter what the true source of the “Dorian” documents is, this article is very well worth reading.

After posting these first two articles under his own name, Minton revealed in the article entitled “Surprise Confession” that they were written by someone he calls Ralph Dorian, and admitting that that is probably a pseudonym.

Minton later posted another article by Ralph Dorian, entitled “An Introduction”, explaining in detail his involvement with creating Scientology.

A later message by an anonymous poster reveals Dorian’s true identity as a Mr Stephen Jory, or so the writer claims.

There was much controversy and discussion about Dorian, and it’s not clear whether he is a creation of Minton, or someone else using a pseudonym. For quite a while, there were postings on the newsgroup by someone claiming to be the “Dorian Author”. A search on Google™ will reveal quite a few of these.

NOTs (New-Era Dianetics for OTs)

The NOTs are a group of secret scriptures of Scientology™. There is an ongoing battle between the leaders of the cult and its critics in which a critic posts a copy of these scriptures (actually, a list of procedures for ridding the body of space cooties), and the cult threatens to sue him for breach of copyright. Generally, the critic removes the NOTs, but someone else has copied them while they were posted, and posts them again somewhere else. Eventually, everyone will have a copy of the NOTs except the members of the cult, who will have to pay dearly to see them, and are not allowed to own copies of them.

From time to time, it is possible to search for the NOTs with a search engine such as Google™, and find them posted somewhere. Get them quick, because they disappear as soon as the cult finds out where they are.
